Extreme Weather Mitigation
Extreme weather conditions are known to take a toll on any exterior building surface. The following considerations are recommended in areas subject to extreme weather conditions when planning for the installation of ExSiding contemporary siding product:

  • Limit the application of engineered wood siding to the north and east faces of buildings where possible.
  • Maintain an appropriate separation between the siding and finished grade to mitigate potential water damage.
  • Avoid terminating the siding product into opposing roof lines and soffits where possible.

Inter-Trade Communication
Contractors and Sub-Contractors should be aware of all details pertaining to the construction and installation of all relevant siding details from pre-construction meetings through final inspection. All tolerances including framed openings and window and door installation require tight tolerances to achieve an ideal and appealing installation.

Installation – Dovetail

Wall Preparation

Moisture Control Measures
Due to daily temperature fluctuation and humidity variation, ExSiding highly recommends covering exterior wall surfaces with a moisture barrier product prior to installation.

Straighten and True
Check that existing wall surfaces are straight and plumb. Shim any irregularities to provide a flat, level surface for installation.

Layout Review

Review the layout and spacing of each siding course prior to installation. The design process can not always take into consideration every field condition and with proper planning installation problems can be avoided.

Window and Door Openings
Review all window and door opening details. Field measures and understanding the interaction between the siding and windows, door jambs, extrusions and other trim is very beneficial to the installation process.

Starter Course
Place the halved course at the desired elevation flat against the furring strips and apply fasteners through the top rear groove into the furring strips, flushing the fasteners to allow space for the spacer slat.

Field Courses
Insert the pre-chinked spacer slat into the groove in the starter course and place the next course onto the slat. Apply fasteners through the top rear groove into the furring strips, flushing the fasteners to allow space for the spacer slat. All subsequent courses are installed using this method.

Top Cleat
Measure the remaining space and rip the remaining course to allow for a 1-1/2″ gap between the top course and any soffit or overhanging surface above the siding installation. The gap may be adjusted to accommodate inconsistencies in wall hanging or layout, but care should be taken to ensure adequate airflow can be achieved. Face screw the top course into the furring strips. A wire mesh is recommended to prevent wildlife from entering the space between the siding and the structure.

Horizontal T&G Mitered Siding
Pre-drill through the tongue portion of the siding and then fasten the siding to the wall using exterior trim screw installed every 32″ o.c. Make sure the siding remains level.

Vertical Chinked Mitered • Vertical Board • Batten Siding
Screw through the face of the siding using exterior trim screws being careful not to penetrate into the surface of the siding. Use local building codes to determine the spacing of the screws.

Horizontal Shiplap Siding
Determine the most desirable overlap and pre-drill the siding and then apply exterior trim screws to the top portion of the siding.
